[r58] Rep. Burton Celebrates Statehood Day (12/10/2010)

Friday, December 10, 2010

Start Date: 12/10/2010 All Day
End Date: 12/10/2010
STATEHOUSE-Rep. Woody Burton (R-Whiteland) celebrated Statehood Day today with students from the Greenwood Bible Baptist School, to commemorate the Hoosier State's 194th birthday.

Eighteen other fourth-grade classes from all over Indiana came to celebrate Statehood Day today, making more than 960 students at the Statehouse and 250 at the Indiana State Museum.

Fourth grade student, Jack Poynter, from Greenwood Bible Baptist was an honorable mention in this year's Statehood Day essay competition, "What Indiana Means to Me."

The essay competition was open to any Indiana fourth-grade public, private or home-schooled student. More than 2,800 essays were submitted for this year's contest.

"It was a privilege for me to be a part of today's celebration and to see students like Jack Poynter be honored for all their hard work. A big 'Congrats' to them," said Rep. Burton. "I hope they were as excited as I was.

"I anticipate that we are able to continue this wonderful tradition for many years to come, and to also continue seeing winners from our area."

Because Hoosier students concentrate on Indiana history and government in the fourth grade, the day's celebration was geared toward fourth-graders.

The celebration included interactive activities presented by the offices of the governor and lieutenant governor, General Assembly, Indiana Supreme Court, state museum, state library and other state agencies.

During the mid-day program, students met with several Indiana government officials, heard musical performances and viewed the original 1816 and 1851 state constitutions.
