"The majority of jails are given packs of prescriptions, but are not given the option to return any unused drugs-state prisons are, but not county jails," Rep. Burton said. Counties that currently dispense medications in packs may be able to reduce costs of medications if they would be able to return unused portions to the dispensing pharmacy. "Allowing county jails to return unused medication would also be a cost saving measure for taxpayers," said Rep. Burton. "They would also have the opportunity to allow for a variety of other prescriptions and not have as many unused on-hand," said Rep. Burton. The legislation will soon be heard in the Senate for further discussion. If passed into law, it will go into effect in July 2011.
