(STATEHOUSE) March 31, 2009 - Indiana restaurants and foodservices represent the largest private-sector employer in Indiana, and today, Rep. Tom Saunders (R-Lewisville) honored the Indiana Restaurant Association for acting as the business voice for this important industry for the past 75 years.

The Indiana Restaurant Association represents more than 1,600 member restaurant properties and industry-related service companies.  The organization serves as the voice of the restaurant industry in matters of policy, public relations and government. The IRA also acts as a liaison between government agencies and its members.

"When we talk about supporting and developing our Hoosier economy, it's easy to overlook the principle role the restaurant industry plays," Rep. Saunders said.  "The IRA makes sure our restaurants have a voice in the Statehouse, and they do a great job.

"It's my pleasure to honor this industry that is so foundational to our economy."

There are more than 10,000 restaurant locations in Indiana, providing jobs for more than 290,000 Hoosiers.  It is projected that in 2009, Indiana's restaurant industry will generate $8.6 billion in sales.

Every $1 spent in Indiana's restaurants generates an additional $1.06 in sales for Indiana's economy.  Each additional $1 million spent in Indiana's restaurant establishments generates an additional 31.7 jobs in Indiana.

Welliver's Smorgasbord in Hagerstown, a local favorite, is a member of the Indiana Restaurant Association's Hall of Fame for its 60 years of service to its community.
