Rep. Smaltz serves as a member of the House Roads and Transportation Committee and expressed his support on both pieces of legislation this session.
HEA 1104 requires the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to work with a third party to study alternative funding mechanisms for the maintenance of Indiana’s transportation infrastructure.
“It’s crucial that the Indiana General Assembly make smart, carefully thought out decisions when it comes to road funding in order to uphold our reputation as the Crossroads of America,” said Rep. Smaltz. “This law will provide the Legislature with extremely valuable information that will help us with future infrastructure decision making.”
Governor Pence also signed into law HEA 1286, a bill that requires INDOT, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), the Indiana Finance Authority and Purdue University to provide annual reports to the Joint Study Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Assessment and Solutions regarding the condition of Indiana’s transportation network and infrastructure.
“This is another great piece of legislation that will provide government transparency,” said Rep. Smaltz. “The summer study committee on transportation will gain important insight from these reports and work closely with the BMV and INDOT to make the best decisions for Indiana.”
The annual reports will be submitted by Aug. 1 of 2014 and 2015.
