STATEHOUSE –House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1028, authored by State Representative Tim Neese (R-Elkhart), was signed into law by the governor today. HEA 1028 increases the maximum amount of a deceased state police officer's supplementary death benefit from $14,500 to $20,000 for state police officers who die after June 30, 2013.

“The last time this figure was increased was in 1985,” said Rep. Neese.  “By increasing the dollar amount for the life insurance policy to $20,000, we are showing that we care for the men and women who put their lives on the line every day. I was glad to have authored this bill and build support for it throughout the legislative process.”

It has been 30 years since there has been any kind of increase in the death benefits that Indiana State Troopers families receive upon their death. This new life insurance policy is not only limited to those who are killed in the line of duty, but would also be received in the instance of a natural death.

“With the cost of living on the rise, the current death benefit of $14,500 seems insufficient - the average cost of a funeral today can range from $3,000 to $5,000.  There is also the possibility of having large amounts of medical bills that need to be paid off.  My hope is that this bill will help many families during a difficult time of a loss,” said Rep. Neese.

The projected cost per year from the state budget is estimated to be approximately $70,000 yearly, with additional funding coming from previously budgeted funds from the Indiana State Police.
