(STATEHOUSE) Feb. 24, 2009 - Rep. Tim Neese (R-Elkhart) voted against House Bill 1729, a bill that would give tax relief to Indiana casinos. The bill is estimated to reduce revenue to the state general fund by a total of $44.8 million over the next two fiscal years and approximately $100 million over five years.

"We need to help Indiana companies that truly need assistance," said Rep. Neese.  "I can't support a plan that financially assists casinos in such a devastating economic climate, when businesses in my district and throughout the state are struggling and closing. Some people don't even have money for gas to go to a casino.

"Tax breaks, tax exemptions, stimulus money, unemployment benefits, etc., should go directly to Indiana residents most in need of assistance. The economic downturn is not a matter of if, but when, it will return. However, the present - which we live in - must be a priority."

"This bill is wrong more now than ever," Rep. Neese said. "Casino revenue is important to the Indiana economy, but out of work Hoosier, truly need assistance during this economic hardship."

According to Neese, over $529 million, on average, is paid in annual wages and benefits to employees of the Indiana casino industry and approximately, and $55 million during the first year of a casino was collected in wagering tax revenue to the state of Indiana.

The House Ways and Means Committee originally passed HB 1729 by a 17-7 vote.
