STATEHOUSE – Rep. Tim Neese (R-Elkhart) applauds Indiana’s ranking as the 15th best state to do business. This figure was recently announced by CNBC’s Top States for Business report. In this report, Indiana was also in the top 15 in five of ten categories: ranking 8th in the cost of doing business, 10th in business friendliness, 12th in education, 14th in access to capital, and 15th in cost of living. The report scored all 50 states on their competitiveness for business growth. The National Association of Manufacturers and the Council on Competitiveness business groups both aided in the report. “Indiana continues to progress, specifically in the business arena, and these rankings are a reflection of its growth,” said Rep. Neese. “To be ranked 15th in the nation for the best business climate is no small accomplishment. Being in the top 10 would have been better, yet given the volatile, nation wide, economic climate the last few years, Indiana remains business solid. I will continue to support legislation promoting private sector growth and economic development making Indiana a more hospitable state for employers to invest and create Hoosier jobs.” States were evaluated through 43 measures of competiveness and each state received points on their ranking. The measures were separated into ten broader categories. The categories were based on how frequently the state cited the category in state economic development marketing materials, ranking the states based on the criteria they use to sell themselves. The ten categories used were: cost of doing business, workforce, quality of life, infrastructure and transportation, economy, education, technology and innovation, business friendliness, access to capital and cost of living. Parallel to these rankings, Indiana continues to foster economic growth by balancing the 2012-2013 state budget, without raising taxes. "The state legislature worked together and found compromise to create a balanced two-year budget this session,” said Rep. Neese. “I believe it positions Indiana to continue this positive business growth and will attract more businesses to the state.” In addition, the General Assembly passed legislation this session to help strengthen the economic climate of the state: HEA 1004 increases access to start-up capital for Indiana businesses in addition to lowering the corporate income tax rate; HEA 1006 promotes economic development locally and regionally; and HEA 1007 allows enhanced abatement schedules and hiring incentives to encourage local job growth.
