STATEHOUSE — State Representative Doug Miller (R-Elkhart) is encouraging Hoosier students to apply for the Indiana House Page Program. The program offers students 13 to 18 years old the chance to visit the Statehouse and see a full day of legislative activity.
“The House Page Program offers an unparalleled opportunity for students to see how their government works,” said Rep. Miller. “Being inside the historic halls of the Statehouse and working alongside their state representative, as well as their respective legislative staff, is a learning experience that students could never get from a textbook alone.”
In addition to visiting the Statehouse, pages have the opportunity to tour locations like Governor Pence’s office, the Indiana Supreme Court and both the House and Senate chambers to list a few. Pages also have the opportunity to observe floor sessions and committee meetings as well as help legislative staff members. Students who serve as pages are excused from school for the day and are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Statehouse.
“As a freshman legislator, I am particularly eager to meet the many bright, young Hoosiers who call Elkhart home,” said Rep. Miller. “I encourage students to take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity and get involved in the legislative process, which is so central to our way of life.”
With spots filling up fast, students who are interested in the Page Program are highly encouraged to schedule their visit quickly. Students are asked to include two separate dates to visit. Those dates should be between the first weeks of January through April. Recommended days to serve include Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays when the House is in session. There are no pages on Fridays.
