End Date: 1/5/2012

STATEHOUSE – Rep. Tim Neese (R-Elkhart) was amongst the House Republican ready to get back to work Wednesday, however the majority of the House Democrats did not show up to do the work of the people. The majority of Democrats failed to attend the start of the 2012 legislative session, which prevented all legislation from moving forward.

“It has been an interesting start to the 2012 legislative session and unfortunate that the Democrats have refused to participate in the legislative process on our first day of business,” said Rep. Neese. “I serve as representative to voice the concerns and issues facing our communities, businesses and families of District 48, but no voices are able to be heard on the House floor if the Democrats refuse to participate.”

“With unemployment one of the main concerns facing both our country and state, getting discussions started about ways to get Indiana residents back to work can only happen if representatives are in the House Chambers to conduct business. With the Democrats not showing up for session, we are unable to hear any pieces of legislation, let alone pieces that would aid in employment opportunities for Hoosiers,” said Rep. Neese. “I am anxious to have legislation presented, so we can begin to dialogue on the House floor about solutions.”

In the Indiana House of Representatives, in order for a bill list to be handed down, a quorum of 67 members must be present. The Democrats denied this quorum, which postponed several the key pieces of legislation addressing government reduction, right-to-work, military family relief, mass transit and a smoking ban.
