(Statehouse) September 5, 2007-State Representative Greg Steuerwald (R-Avon) was sworn in to office at the Statehouse today. Steuerwald was recently elected by GOP precinct officials to fill the House District 40 seat vacated by Representative Matt Whetstone. Chief Justice Randall T. Shepherd performed the ceremony in the House Chamber.
"I am honored to have been chosen to represent House District 40. This is the perfect time to begin the next chapter of my life and begin tenure as a state representative," said Steuerwald. "There are a number of issues I am deeply concerned about, and I hope that we will be able to address some of them in the upcoming legislative session, mainly reforming Indiana's current property tax structure without placing too much burden on local governments. Local officials are accountable and easily accessible; therefore, we need to ensure that they have our support at the state level."
Prior to attending law school, Steuerwald utilized his Masters in Criminal Justice by serving as a Probation Officer for two years. While attending Indiana University-Indianapolis, he served as an intern in the Hendricks County Prosecutor's Office. Upon graduation from law school, he joined his present law firm and has been there since 1981.
His firm has represented various units of local government including towns, libraries and townships. Steuerwald's law firm presently represents the Hendricks County Board of Commissioners, the Hendricks County Plan Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals, the Hendricks County Health Department, Hendricks Regional Health and the Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District.
In 1996, Steuerwald received the Hendricks County Outstanding Economic Development Award. He is a certified Probation Officer with the State of Indiana Department of Corrections. He is also a registered mediator, having received a Certificate of Recognition in Family Mediation Training through the Indiana Continuing Legal Education Forum.
House District 40 is located in Hendricks County and includes the towns of Plainfield, Brownsburg and Avon.
"I am open and willing to speak with my constituents about any issues they may be concerned about," said Steuerwald. "My door is always open."
