[r38] SJR 1 Second Reading Statement (2/26/2008)

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Start Date: 2/26/2008 All Day
End Date: 2/26/2008

"Speaker Bauer has moved property tax caps from the known to the unknown," said Rep. Buck. "Schools, cities, towns, counties and others will be flying blind as a result of voting to eliminate the tax cap on assessed value to an income tax on household income.

"What is a household income and how much will it bring for local funding? Speaker Bauer and the majority party admit they do not know. By not allowing a cap on assessed value, we are subjecting a possible increase of property taxation on renters, farmers and employers.

"Without understanding the consequences of SJR 1, Speaker Bauer has put all property taxpayers and local units of government at great risk of unintended consequences, especially schools."
