STATEHOUSE – The 2013 legislative session has come to a finish. State Representative Heath VanNatter (R-Kokomo) is pleased to see two of his bills become law this session: Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 319 and SEA 387. “A lot of great things were accomplished for Hoosier families this session,” said Rep. VanNatter. “I am proud that we were able to keep our promises to Hoosiers by putting jobs, education and fiscal integrity first. I was also pleased to personally be involved in other specific pieces of legislation that address various matters including tax relief for farmers.” SEA 319 addresses the assessment of farmland for property tax purposes. The Department of Local Government Finance produced a list of changes last year that equals an immediate 20 percent increase in property taxes on farmland. Taxes on farmland the last few years have increased dramatically as the newly enacted controls have held other classes of property static or reduced. By fast tracking the bill, local assessors can implement the new statute before spring documents are mailed out to property owners. The law also establishes an interim study committee to study agriculture property tax issues. SEA 319 was the first bill to be signed by Gov. Pence in February. SEA 387 increases from $50 to $100 the minimum fine imposed for certain violations involving parking a vehicle in a handicap or disabled veteran parking space. Parking violators may still receive a larger fine of up to $500. “The work will continue this summer with interim study committees where we will be able to take a closer look at issues that we didn’t have enough time with during session,” said Rep. VanNatter. “While the work is never done, I feel great about the progress made for Hoosiers. It has been an honor to represent our community throughout another legislative session.” -30- |
