The Indiana Department of Administration currently has quantity purchase agreements with road salt vendors, but it does not offer the road salt to local communities under the same purchasing agreement. "House Bill 1650 requires the IDOA to offer local communities the same opportunity to save money when purchasing road salt without requiring additional costs for IDOA," said Rep. Clements. In addition, the bill limits the amount of time an abandoned vehicle can sit on the side of a road. Currently, a vehicle cannot be considered abandoned or removed from Indiana roadways until it has been sitting for at least 72 hours. House Bill 1650 will lower that time period to 24 hours. "Abandoned vehicles parked on the side of the road are safety hazards that can cause accidents and traffic congestion," said Rep. Clements. "Moving from 72 hours to 24 hours will allow law enforcement to clean up our roadways in a more timely fashion, protecting Hoosier motorists. This bill also protects the owners of abandoned vehicles with regard to personal property and liability issues."
