STATEHOUSE (March 19, 2009) - Out-of-work Hoosiers who have exhausted their state and federal unemployment benefits may be eligible for an additional 13 weeks of assistance. The Indiana Department of Workforce Development's extended benefits program is in effect, and Hoosiers whose unemployment benefits are scheduled to end on or after March 21 are eligible. "This announcement could not have come at better time for unemployed Hoosiers," said Rep. Jacque Clements (R-Frankfort). "Those eligible will be notified by mail beginning this week. However, the extended benefits will come with stricter requirements than previous benefits." Benefit recipients can check their unemployment insurance benefits end date through the state's online filing system. Among the requirements for the extended benefits: - Individuals must apply for at least three jobs per week and maintain a work-search log. - Work-search waivers are no longer available. - Individuals must accept any work offer they can physically perform. The Indiana Department of Workforce Development estimates 3,400 Hoosiers will immediately qualify for extended benefits with an additional 2,000 Hoosiers qualifying each subsequent week. For more information about the extended benefits, visit the Department of Workforce Development Web page at www.in.gov/dwd or call 1-800-891-6499. Contact Rep.
