(STATEHOUSE) Jan. 29, 2008 - A bill passed overwhelmingly by the House of Representatives on Tuesday could lead to increased shipping opportunities for Indiana businesses. House Bill 1083, co-authored by Rep. Jim Buck (R-Kokomo), requires the Indiana Port Commission to create a study on Hoosier inland ports to determine the optimal sites in Indiana to establish inland ports for intermodal commerce and industrial development zones.

The House passed the bill by a vote of 94-0, and the bill moves to the Senate.

"Indiana, in terms of ports across the country, is eighth in the country for tonnage and cargo," said Rep. Buck. "In order to make this benefit the state and the country, we must complete the study."

The commission shall submit a report of the results of the study and its recommendation to the legislative council in an electronic format before Jan. 1, 2009.

In action involving another bill co-authored by Rep. Buck, the House passed House Bill 1164, which provides property tax deductions for model residences. The bill, which passed by a vote of 87-4, will allow a 100-percent deduction for up to three model residences, per owner, for four consecutive years, so long as the property was never a residence.

"Model communities are a growing trend in Indiana," said Rep. Buck. "Providing developers with a deduction on model homes will enable developers to keep men and women on the job sites. This is a principled economic bill and a jobs bill"

Upon passage, the deduction would be retroactively effective as of Jan. 1, 2008.
