STATEHOUSE – State Representative Heath VanNatter (R-Kokomo) sponsored Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 387 regarding parking for people with disabilities. SEA 387 was signed into law by Governor Mike Pence.

The legislation increases from $50 to $100 the minimum fine imposed for certain violations involving parking a vehicle in a handicap or disabled veteran parking space. SEA 387, authored by State Senator Ed Charbonneau (R-Valparaiso), passed out of the Senate 45-4, and passed out of the House unanimously.

“The purpose of this bill is to disincentive the violation of handicap and disabled veteran parking laws,” said Rep. VanNatter. “Unfortunately, too many individuals ignore handicap signs, and increasing the penalty for violators should serve as a deterrent for illegally parking.”

The new law addresses the minimum fine only. Parking violators may still receive a larger fine of up to $500.

SEA 387 will go into effect July 1, 2013.
