[r38] Don't forget about your homestead verifications (4/26/2010)

Monday, April 26, 2010

Start Date: 4/26/2010 All Day
End Date: 4/26/2010

Rep. Jacque Clements (R-Frankfort) is warning people not to be alarmed when they see an extra piece of paper with their property tax bill this year.

House Enrolled Act 1344 was passed last year to begin requiring tax statements to include a form that allows taxpayers to verify their residency and eligibility for the homestead deduction.

In addition, this form is an extra protection to reduce homestead fraud.

"I can't stress how important it is that you fill out this form," said Rep. Clements. "This form will allow you to keep receiving your homestead standard deduction.

"Failing to do so could potentially result in losing your homestead deduction beginning in 2013."

The form is not required to be returned in person. Property owners can mail it back to the provided address, and include their driver's license number and the last five digits of their social security number.

This information will only be used to track the homestead database and to prevent fraud.
