(STATEHOUSE) Jan. 13, 2009 - State Rep. Bill Davis, R-Portland, plans to introduce House Bill 1390 that would boost funding for local streets and roads. Under Rep. Davis' proposal, if gas prices rise above $2.50 per gallon before taxes, 50 percent of the tax money would be transferred to the local road and street account. The other half would go to the state highway fund. Currently, the state general fund receives the majority of the money generated from gasoline sales. "This bill gets the dollars to local roads, where they're needed the most," said Rep. Davis. Similar bills have been introduced in past legislative sessions. "We've struggled with this issue before," said Rep. Davis. "I'm really hoping that it will be heard this time." -30-
