(STATEHOUSE) Feb. 3, 2009 - The Indiana General Assembly today passed a resolution honoring U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Andrew F. Whitacre who died on June 19, 2008 while conducting combat operations in Farah Province in Afghanistan.

Lance Corporal Whitacre was the 19th member of the armed services from Indiana to die in Afghanistan or Pakistan since U.S. anti-terrorism operations began in late 2001.

Friends and family members of Late Corporal Whitacre joined Rep. Bill Davis (R-Portland) as he presented the resolution to the Indiana House of Representatives.

"The family and friends of Lance Corporal Whitacre can take comfort in the knowledge that he believed in what he was doing and that he is truly an American hero," said Rep. Davis. "His passion for helping others was evident in his desire to serve his country."

Twenty-one year-old Lance Corporal Whitacre, a 2005 graduate of Jay County High School, was from the town of Bryant and enlisted in the Marines shortly after graduation.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division and 1st Marine Expeditionary.

"Lance Corporal Whitacre wanted to be a marine since he was 14."
