(STATEHOUSE) Jan. 22, 2009 - State Rep. Bill Davis took time to honor the Wick family during today's session and to request that the sugar cream pie become Indiana's state pie.

The Wick family has owned and operated Wick's Pies in Winchester for more than 50 years.

"I am glad we were able to take time to honor a great company that has continually, for the last 50 years, gainfully employed Hoosiers to produce a quality product," said Rep. Davis. "This family is dedicated to our Hoosier values and is dedicated to making a quality product that makes them known throughout the world."

When Wick's Pies began, the company, using a small kitchen, produced 20 pies a day for local factory workers. Wick's daily production now tops 10,000 pies.

"The Wicks family has received tremendous support from the community, and it is great to see small, family-owned businesses be honored in this way," said Rep. Davis.

Winchester Mayor Steve Croyle joined Rep. Davis at the podium during the session.

"I am very excited to be here to honor the Wicks family, but also, to recognize other entrepreneurs in Indiana who are determined to remain successful through this tough time," said Mayor Croyle.

"The Wicks family has always demonstrated the work ethic and can-do attitude that represents Hoosier values. I think it is great that this legislative body has taken the time to recognize those values and what people of Winchester have accomplished."

State Sen. Allen Paul (R-Richmond) presented Senate Concurrent Resolution 5, which proposes that the sugar cream pie become the official state pie and rename it "Hoosier Pie."

Students and faculty at Ball State University and members of the Indiana Foodways Alliance, a not-for-profit group that identifies, promotes and preserves authentic food culture, found the dessert's original recipe dates back to Hoosier farm kitchens of the early 1800s.
