(STATEHOUSE) Jan. 13, 2009 - A bill filed today by state Rep. Bill Davis (R-Portland) would allow local governments to control the use of golf carts on their roads and streets. House Bill 1277 would give local officials the power to enact ordinances allowing residents to drive golf carts in their communities. "The ordinance will allow residents to operate golf carts on the municipal streets or private roads, or both," said Rep. Davis. "This has been a heavily debated issue in my district, and I hope it will give local governments control to decide if they want to adopt the ordinance for their community." The ordinance would require the golf cart to display a slow-moving-vehicle sign or a red flashing lamp. Golf cart operators may also be required to hold driver's licenses. If a city or town does not adopt the ordinance, HB 1277 would prohibit the use of golf cart on public or private thoroughfares. Rep. Davis encourages constituents to contact him with questions, concerns or comments by e-mail at h33@in.gov, by telephone 1-800-382-9841 or by mail at the Statehouse, 200 W. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46204.
