STATEHOUSE – State Rep. Bill Davis (R-Portland) congratulates the Bell, Flory, Strait Farm of Jay County and the C.C. Carpenter Farm of Randolph County for receiving the Hoosier Homestead Award. The awards were presented by Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann and Agriculture Director Gina Sheets at the Indiana State Fair today.

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes families with farms that have been owned by the same family for 100 years or more. Fifty-four Centennial awards were given for 100 years of ownership, 15 Sesquicentennial awards recognized 150 years and three Bicentennial awards for operating at least 200 years in the Hoosier state.

The Bell, Flory, Strait Farm, located near Portland, Ind., has been in operation since 1902. The C.C. Carpenter Farm is located near Union City, Ind. and has been in operation since 1910. Both families received the Centennial award for over 100 years of ownership.

The program began in 1976 to acknowledge the contributions these families have made to Indiana agriculture. More than 5,000 farms have been recognized since the program was established.

“Since our state was founded almost 200 years ago, agriculture has played a significant role in our livelihood. Without the diligent work of Hoosier families on farms such as these, this industry could have never flourished in the way that it has,” said Rep. Davis. “I appreciate these families’ commitment to serving our state, and it is with the deepest regard that I congratulate them on their farm’s longevity. I wish them many more years of plentiful harvests.”

Two award ceremonies are held each year – one at the Statehouse in February and one at the State Fair in August.
