Rep. Davis: A Big Win for Gun Owners STATEHOUSE- State Rep. Bill Davis (R-Portland) supports the United States Supreme Court's decision today restraining the government's ability to significantly limit "the right to keep and bear arms." Last year, Rep. Davis signed onto the National Rifle Association's (NRA) amicus brief in this case, exhibiting his support for the NRA and its philosophy protecting the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. "Today's Supreme Court decision goes a long way in reinforcing gun owners' rights. I am proud to have been a part of such an important case," said Rep. Davis. "This case helps stop overreaching by governments into the rights of our citizens." The laws passed by the City of Chicago and the Village of Oak Park in Illinois completely banned hand guns. Although in a case two years ago, the Supreme Court had protected an individual's right to possess guns that decision applied to self-defense in the home and only applied to federal laws. Today's case strikes down bans passed at the local level, broadly applying the Second Amendment to state and local laws, as well as federal laws. |
