STATEHOUSE – Indiana Legislators were sworn in today, Organization Day, which marks the first meeting for the 119th General Assembly. All 100 members of the House, including eight new Republicans, were sworn in by Chief Justice Loretta Rush. State Representative Greg Beumer (R-Modoc) was reelected to represent House District 33, which includes Jay and Randolph counties and portions of Delaware County.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to represent our rural community in Indianapolis,” said Rep. Beumer. “This session, I will continue my work to improve our area of the state, mainly through education reform. Currently, the bottom 10 performing school corporations are receiving 30 percent more state dollars than the top 10 performing schools. It is imperative that we find a common-sense fix to this problem so that more of our local schools are receiving their fair share.”

In addition to being sworn in, every Organization Day includes an announcement made by House Speaker Brian C. Bosma (R-Indianapolis) to support and raise awareness for a certain charity throughout the legislative session. This year’s philanthropy, which the entire House participates in, is the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV).

ICADV is a statewide alliance that provides technical assistance, resources, information and training to those who serve victims of domestic violence. The organization also promotes social and systems change through public policy, public awareness and education.

“Domestic violence is a serious issue impacting many Hoosiers, and as a father and grandfather, I truly hope that this collaboration will increase awareness so that victims of domestic violence know where to turn if they need help,” said Rep. Beumer. “Unfortunately, many instances of domestic violence still go unreported, so by helping to raise awareness, we are taking a stand and working to stop these horrible acts from occurring.”

During Organization Day, Rep. Beumer joined fellow legislators and staff by bringing in bedding, grocery store gift cards, art supplies and other items for domestic violence service providers across the state.
