Redundancy-nixing bill sponsored by Rep. Davis heads to Governor's desk

STATEHOUSE - Senate Bill 418, sponsored by State Rep. Bill Davis (R-Portland) is on its way to Gov. Mitch Daniels' desk. The bill is designed to reduce local government redundancy for public projects.

SB 418 provides that county committees that establish the common wages for public projects do not need to meet more than once every three months. Currently, these committees must meet before every public project costing over $150,000 to establish common wages for workers involved in a project. Under SB 418, the common wage set by a county common wage committee for a public project would be effective for any public projects occurring in the subsequent three months, and the committee would not be required to meet again until another public project comes up beyond the three months.

"This is a simple bill to reduce redundancy," said Rep. Davis. "If a county has multiple public projects going on within a short amount of time, it is pointless for the county common wage committee to meet for every project as they are currently required to do.

"Instead we can save committee members and those involved in these projects time by having the committees establish common wages that are effective for three months rather than meet for every single qualifying project that comes up."

After successfully passing through both the House and the Senate, SB 418 will now go to the governor's desk for approval.

If enacted into law, the legislation will be effective beginning July 1, 2011.
