STATEHOUSE - State Representative Greg Beumer (R-Modoc) is encouraging college students and recent college graduates to apply for an internship with the Indiana House of Representatives. Applications are currently being accepted for the upcoming 2015 legislative session. The internship will begin in January and last for the duration of session, which will conclude in late April. Interns will receive a bi-weekly stipend of $700 in addition to the opportunity to apply for a competitive $3,000 Verizon scholarship towards their undergraduate or graduate expenses. Most colleges and universities also offer a course for credit in tangent with the internship, so applicants are advised to work with their academic advisors. “Simply put - this internship is unlike any other,” said Rep. Beumer. “It is very rare nowadays for internships to not only count for academic credit, but also be paid. In addition, by interning with the House, students are setting themselves up to be among the first considered when a full-time position opens up on staff because they already have invaluable training. Both of my current full-time staffers served as interns first.” All academic majors are accepted, and applicants are able to choose their preference of one of the following departments: o Member Services: Interns will be paired with a Legislative Assistant as they work directly with an assigned group of state representatives. Some of the responsibilities include: tracking legislation, working with constituents and researching legislative questions or problems. o Communications: Interns will be paired with a Press Secretary as they assist with media relations for an assigned group of state representatives. Some of the responsibilities include: writing news releases, columns, video production, social media analysis, arranging interviews with reporters, photography and covering press conferences. o Information Technology: Technology interns will work with the IT Director and PC Technician in providing technical support to the caucus for laptops and tablets. o Policy: The policy intern will work with the Policy Director, Deputy Policy Director and Policy Analyst to research, track and analyze legislation. o Ways and Means: The Ways and Means intern will work with the Senior Fiscal Analyst and Fiscal Analyst on issues that directly relate to the state’s finances and biennial budget.
