End Date: 3/5/2014
State Representative Greg Beumer (R-Modoc) co-authored legislation that provides a property tax deduction for certain heritage barns. Yesterday, that legislation passed the Senate on third reading by a unanimous vote.

House Bill (HB) 1046 permits a person to receive a 100 percent property tax deduction against the assessed value of an eligible heritage barn that was constructed before 1950, is in disrepair and is no longer being used as a barn. The barn must still retain sufficient integrity of design, materials and construction to clearly identify the building as a barn.

“These barns are part of Indiana’s history,” said Rep. Beumer. “By allowing this property tax deduction, we are offering an incentive to repair these barns and allowing an opportunity to preserve our state’s rural heritage. It is important that heritage barns remain a part of our state's landscape.”

The deduction against the assessed value of the structure and foundation of an eligible heritage barn will begin with assessments after 2014.

HB 1046 will now go back to the House for concurrence because it was amended in the Senate.
