Every year, more than 3 million cases of child abuse are reported in the United States. To help improve awareness of the problem, Prevent Child Abuse of Delaware County has scheduled a baby shower during Step Up for Kids Week.
Scheduled speakers at the event include Dr. Donna Wilkins of the Delaware County Health Department and Jackie Fisher of the Delaware County Department of Child Services. There will also be demonstrations of the effects of shaken-baby syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome and drug-addicted babies.
"It's important for members of our community to support agencies such as Prevent Child Abuse of Delaware County," Rep. Bill Davis (Portland-R) said. "I hope the baby shower brings adults together to protect all children."
Those attending are encouraged to donate baby items, and those items will benefit Beds-N-Britches, First Choice for Women and Healthy Families Programs. Bringing a gift will automatically enter people in door-prize drawings.
The event is co-sponsored by Community Partners of Child Safety, Action Inc. of Delaware and Grant Counties, Open Door/BMH Health Center and A Better Way.
