Rep. Karickhoff supports school credit transfers SB 182 develops curriculum standards between state educational institutions in order to ease the credit transfer process from one institution to another, increasing opportunities for students to transfer credits from a two-year associate degree to a four-year bachelor’s degree program. “Giving students more flexibility to get a degree in their own time, on their own schedule is something this bill does very well,” Rep. Karickhoff said. “Too many students spend thousands of dollars and many years in college and wind up with no degree to show for it.” The bill also requires the Indiana Commission for Higher Education to work with state colleges to develop policies allowing students who earn a two-year associate degree to transfer their credits to a related four-year bachelor’s degree program at the same status as a junior, preventing them from having to retake classes of similar content. “After earning an associate’s degree, sometimes a student may decide to work for a while or take another path before going back to get a bachelor’s,” said Rep. Karickhoff. “This legislation allows students to count every credit of their two-year degree toward a four-year degree, saving them money, nearly 40 percent, towards their bachelor’s degree. In this economy, we have more students graduating with debt than we do jobs – we are trying to address both situations here in the General Assembly.
