[r30] Rep. Karickhoff encouraging local students to partake in essay competition (10/14/2011)

STATEHOUSE— State Representative Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo) is encouraging local fourth graders to participate in an essay competition in conjunction with “Indiana Statehood Day,” a celebration of Indiana’s 195th birthday.

The Indiana Statehouse Tour Office is sponsoring the competition. Winners will be honored at the Statehood Day Celebration taking place on Friday, December 9, 2011 from 12:00 to 1:00 P.M. EST, at the Indiana Statehouse. All essays must be received or postmarked October 28, 2011.

“Learning about our state’s history is important for all students,” said Rep. Karickhoff. “This is a great chance for local fourth graders to expand their knowledge and take part in a unique contest.”

The competition rules are as follows:

• The competition is open to any Indiana fourth grade student.
 
• Essays need to range from 100 to 400 words, handwritten or typed.

• Essays must include student’s name, teacher’s name, and the school’s name, address and telephone number. Please make sure the school name is on every essay.
 
• Essays should convey: What living in the State of Indiana means to the student—what are the things that make the student glad that he or she is a Hoosier?

A group of selected judges will read through all entries and then choose first, second and third place winners. The first place winner will be invited to read his or her essay at the December 9 ceremony.

“Hopefully, all fourth graders in the area choose to partake in celebrating our state’s birthday by submitting their essays,” said Rep. Karickhoff. “This is a great way for everyone to come together and appreciate the state we live in.”
