Local farm recognized with Hoosier Homestead Award

STATEHOUSE- Rep. Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo) joined Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman and Agriculture Director Joe Kelsay in honoring the Shafer farm Wednesday, Aug. 8 at the Hoosier Homestead Award Ceremony at the Indiana State Fair.

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes families with farms that have been owned by the same family for 100 years or more. Forty-six Centennial awards were given for 100 years of ownership and 29 Sesquicentennial awards recognized 150 years.

The program began in 1976 to acknowledge the contributions these families have made to Indiana agriculture. More than 5,000 farms have been recognized since the program was established.

“This is an amazing accomplishment,” said Rep. Karickhoff.  “Having the will and determination to keep a business functioning this long is truly remarkable.”

Two award ceremonies are held each year – one at the Statehouse in February and one at the State Fair in August.
