Friday, December 10, 2010

Start Date: 12/10/2010 All Day
End Date: 12/10/2010
Rep. Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo) and other elected officials today honored Dilanya Moonesinghe, a 4th grader from Sycamore Elementary, at the Indiana Statehouse for her winning essay entitled "What Indiana Means to Me." Out of the 2,880 applications submitted this year, hers was awarded third place.

"Dilanya's essay reminds me of why I am so proud to be a Hoosier," said Rep. Karickhoff. "She is a talented writer and really captured some of the greatest things about our state."

The essay begins, "Indiana is hope. It's boys playing football at recess hoping that they might be good as the Colts and Peyton Manning. It's a farmer hoping and wishing that his corn and soybeans would be the best. It's a kid learning and wanting to go to a good college, like IU, Purdue, or Notre Dame."

Each year at the Statehouse on or around December 11, 4th grade classes are invited to help honor Indiana's birthday as part of their unit on state history. Provided are interactive displays, a special program and an essay contest for students from around the state.

Indiana is 194 years old this year.
