STATEHOUSE – State Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton) was recently named Legislator of the Year by the Aviation Association of Indiana (AAI) for sponsoring and supporting pro-job legislation last session. The award was given at the annual AAI conference in Plymouth, Ind. on Oct. 11.

“The logistics industry is a major driver of Indiana’s economy,” said Rep. Thompson. “As the Crossroads of America, it is no wonder that transportation companies are attracted to Indiana – great, central location, pro-business tax policies and continued investment in our state’s infrastructure.”

During the 2012 legislative session, Rep. Thompson sponsored Senate Bill (SB) 321, also known as the Transportation and Logistics Tax Credit. It was intended to provide a 25 percent credit for logistic enhancement projects, creating new jobs, preserving existing jobs, increasing wages and improving Indiana’s economy.
The bill passed in the Senate but died in the House.

“… Rep. Thompson understand[s] that by improving our logistics industry, we reduce the costs of transporting Indiana’s goods to market and Hoosier companies become more competitive in the marketplace,” said Bart Giesler, AAI Executive Director. “The logistics tax credit will lead to more jobs in the construction and transportation industry, but just as importantly, they will also increase the number of jobs in agriculture and manufacturing as these industries will benefit by the reduced transportation costs.  AAI looks forward to continue to work with the Indiana General Assembly to establish the tax credit.”

The AAI is an advocate for aviation interests and provides a network for those involved in the field. Mindful that aviation is a critical component of Indiana’s economy, the AAI continues to communicate this with the public and the General Assembly. The AAI regularly recognizes lawmakers for their efforts to promote legislation benefitting the air travel industry.
