The resolution was authored by Sen. Marlin Stutzman (R-Howe) in response to an executive order by President Obama ordering the Guantanamo Bay detention facility closed within a year. This order has left many speculating that some of the 240 detainees might be sent to the federal prison in Terre Haute. "I support Sen. Stutzman's resolution because I don't want to jeopardize the safety of Hoosier families by allowing suspected terrorists to be housed in Indiana," said Rep. Thompson. "Too many the brave men and women in our military have risked their lives, some making the ultimate sacrifice, to let any of these 240 detainees be placed in our state." Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-Jimtown) and Rep. Bill Davis (R-Portland) will carry the House version of this resolution. Facilities in South Carolina, Kansas, California and Colorado are possible locations for the reassignment of detainees. Legislation has been drafted by U.S. House of Representatives that would block transfers to a prison just north of San Diego. U.S. congressmen from South Carolina and Colorado have opposed the idea of bringing detainees to their states, as well. |
