Rep. Thompson Appointed to Chair the Administrative Rules Oversight Commission

STATEHOUSE- House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis) appointed State Representative Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton) to serve as the Chairman of the Administrative Rules Oversight Commission. In addition to that appointment, Rep. Thompson will also be serving on the Education Technology Council and the Pension Management Oversight Commission.

"It is an honor to be the Chairman for the Administrative Rules Oversight Commission as well as being appointed to the Education Technology Council and Pension Management Oversight Commission.

"I look forward to working on these committees to make recommendations that can be discussed during the 2012 legislative session," said Rep. Thompson.

The Legislative Council meets, after session concludes, to assign topics for study during the interim as well as establish any new interim committee that is needed to examine a particular issue.  Interim committees are an integral component of the legislative process.

Most committees begin in July and end around October.

The committees that Rep. Thompson is serving on will be studying the following:

Administrative Rules Oversight Commission 

  • Field citizen complaints concerning agency rules or practices
  • Violations of the time frames within which agencies must promulgate and adopt rules
  • Oversee proposed agency rules that may have an economic fiscal impact of $500,000 or more

Pension Management Oversight Commission

  • Study the investment and management practices of the boards of the public retirement funds
  • Determine what constitutes adequate wage replacement levels at retirement (including benefits from public retirement funds and social security) for public employees
  • Study the impact of federal law and proposals concerning pensions, annuities, and retirement benefits
  • Study the public safety officers retirement funds established under IC 36-8
  • Study methods and levels of funding for public retirement plans
  • Study and make recommendations, including any recommended legislation, concerning the structure of the Indiana state  teachers' retirement fund established by IC 5-10.4-2-1
  • Study the issue of implementing a judges' defined contribution fund
  • Study any inequities that exist between the benefits provided by the 1977 judges' retirement system and the benefits provided by the 1985 judges' retirement system
  • Identify the ways in which the benefits provided by the 1977 judges' retirement system and the benefits provided by the 1985 judges' retirement system may be aligned

Education Technology Council

  • Advise the state superintendent and the Governor on education and related technology initiatives
