Rep. Jeff Thompson wants local residents to be aware that this year, they may receive an extra sheet of paper with their property tax bill.
This pink form is a result of legislation that was enacted in 2009 through House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1344.
Starting in 2010, HEA 1344 requires the tax statement to include a form that allows taxpayers to verify their residency and eligibility for the homestead deduction. In addition, this form is an extra protection to reduce homestead fraud.
This form allows Hoosier homeowners to continue receiving the homestead standard deduction. Failing to fill out this form could mean loss of the homestead deduction beginning in 2013.
It is not necessary to return the form in person. Simply mail it back to the provided address including the last five digits of the homeowner's social security number and driver's license number.
This information will only be used to track the homestead database and to prevent fraud. By ensuring that everyone is sharing equally in the property tax burden, this will help reduce taxes for all.
