I met Byron Ernest almost 20 years ago while serving on the Indiana State Fair Board, and I quickly realized he was a leader in agricultural education across Indiana. His philosophy of helping others achieve their best still guides him. The students at Lebanon High School are so fortunate to have a teacher of his caliber helping them prepare for their future. I am extremely proud the Department of Education has recognized Byron's talent, service and impact. The award confirms what his students, his colleagues and I have known for years. Now, the whole state knows. Soon, the nation will learn about Byron Ernest. As Indiana Teacher of the Year, Byron now is a candidate for National Teacher of the Year, an award given next spring. The honoree will be chosen from among the State Teachers of the Year by a national selection committee representing the major national education organizations. In their deliberations, the committee will learn about Byron's contributions to education in Indiana and the lives of young Hoosiers. President Barack Obama will make the National Teacher of the Year introduction in April. Congratulations, Byron, and thank you. Your dedication to our students is an inspiration. Sincerely, State Rep. Jeff Thompson District 28
