STATEHOUSE — House Bill (HB) 1287 passed out of the House with a unanimous vote Tuesday. State Representative Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton) authored the measure addressing local government consolidation. HB 1287 would allow for local governments to consolidate and reorganize without fear of losing the ability to maintain their funds used for the purchase and replacement of fire protection equipment. Current law prohibits merged government units from maintaining fire protection equipment funds. HB 1287 remedies the situation. “This bill removes an unnecessary roadblock to government consolidation,” said Rep. Thompson. “Local governments desiring to merge, pool resources and streamline administrative duties will no longer have to weigh the risks of possible financial repercussions or forfeiture of necessary fire protection.” HB 1287 will now go to the Senate for further consideration. -30- Rep.
