"Det. Rich is a hero who served our state honorably," said Rep. Friend. "I offer my deepest regrets to his family, and I thank them for his years of dedicated service. He clearly was an excellent role model for his community. David will be missed." Det. Rich was killed July 5, 2007, in the line of duty on U.S. 24 near State Road 115, one mile west of Wabash. He was on his way home, dressed in plain clothes and driving an unmarked car, when he stopped to investigate what he thought was a stranded motorist along the side of the road. Unaware the man was driving an SUV that had been reported stolen the pervious day, he approached the vehicle and was shot by the driver. Det. Rich was born April 8, 1966, and dreamed of serving as an Indiana State Police trooper. On Nov. 19, 1989, he fulfilled that goal and became a member of the Indiana State Police. He was also a devoted husband, loving father and son, and a good friend to many. Surviving are his wife, Connie and their three beautiful children Lauren, Connor and Carson. The Rich family had a long tradition of service. Det. Rich's father, Jack Rich, was an Indiana State Police trooper from 1958 to 1990. After retiring, he served as the Miami County sheriff for two terms. Det. Rich's brother Rob Rich is also an Indiana State Police Trooper. Rep.
