Honoring the fallen
Memorial Day, or Decoration Day as it used to be known, is a time of reflection and honor for those who have gone before us. We especially recognize our veterans of the military who sacrificed so much for our freedom. Without the service of so many, we might not be enjoying the wonderful freedoms this country affords us. It is important to keep their memories alive with our younger generation, so they will know of the sacrifices that were made and which we benefit from each and every day. Americans, now and in the future, will forever be indebted to those who have served to protect our great country. I want to add my sincerest “thank you” and appreciation for their sacrifices. It seems pertinent that we have a more public discussion about our love of country and patriotism. A person doesn’t have to be a soldier to be a patriot. Any man, woman or child can display their love and respect for their country. With all the unrest around the world, it should reinforce how fortunate we are to enjoy our freedom here in the U.S. I believe it is an incredibly worthy goal for each of us to be more vocal and demonstrative about our love of country. Sometimes we just take too many things for granted. It is my hope that each of us does some introspection and becomes more vocal to demonstrate our patriotism. We live in a great country, and we should be proud of it. The spring weather has finally presented itself, and farmers are making great progress planting their crops. Planting season can be plenty stressful, and a wet spring only intensifies farmers’ stress level. I hope everyone has a safe and bountiful harvest this season. Lastly, here in Indiana, one of the traditions for Memorial Day weekend is the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. This year will be the 97th running of the race, which had been deemed the greatest spectacle in racing. Race fans from all over the world come here to visit and take part in all the activities of the 500. It is a great economic engine for the city and state with international appeal. My wish is for a safe and enjoyable race and a fantastic experience for all who attend. Have a wonderful Memorial Day and don’t forget to display your flag! More later, Bill Friend |
