Occasionally, I get to speak to an Indiana State Trooper or a sheriff deputy. They usually point out that I should slow down as I get from Point A to Point B in my scheduled meetings and appearances. I take their warnings very seriously, and I have slowed down. It is necessary that I commend the law enforcement officers for their work. In the last few months, my area has had two officers give the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. David Rich, from Miami and Wabash counties, was killed during a charitable action to help a stopped car. Trooper David Barrett lost his life while pursuing a speeder in Fulton County. These men were both working to protect and assist the general welfare of the public. They were both responding to their obligation to assist the citizens of Indiana. One was killed by a gunshot, and the other lost his life in a car crash. Each was a tragic loss to their families and to the citizens of Indiana. My family has close ties to the Rich family, and we grieved with them when David died. Trooper Barrett had just been commissioned to service and was beginning his service to society and Indiana. All of us should understand the commitment these officers demonstrated and respect their dedication. The state of Indiana has received the service of these men and has honored their lives. It is imperative that the localities where these men worked honor their work. The General Assembly will recognize their sacrifice with a resolution to honor them, but we cannot let that be the end or conclusion of their remembrance. Everyone involved in law enforcement should be appreciated because each officer takes the chance that circumstances may take their life. Most of us don't endure the danger of losing our life as we do our job or profession. Please be appreciative of our police, fire and EMS personnel as they do their jobs on a day-to-day basis. They don't know when the emergencies will occur any more than we do, but they have to be there and be prepared to help. We can work to prevent emergencies, but we can't be totally successful. Bad things happen, and we rely on our emergency personnel. I salute all the policemen, firefighters and EMS because they look out for all of us on a daily basis. Please respect their service and the challenge of the ultimate sacrifice. Continue the communications. I appreciate the input. |
