STATEHOUSE –State Representative Rebecca Kubacki (R-Syracuse) began work as a new member of the Educational Outcomes Task Force. Under the Commission on Improving the Status of Children in Indiana (CISC), the task force met to discuss different topics, like the education of youth in secure settings, to improve the education outcomes for Hoosier children.

“Every Hoosier child deserves a quality education, even those in the Department of Corrections,” said Rep. Kubacki. “When looking into the educational outcomes for these children, we found the graduation rates were deplorable. These kids have many challenges to deal with and education should not be one of them. I refuse to give up on any child, and I am committed to doing all I can to help them become productive and successful citizens.”

CISC was created through Senate Enrolled Act 125, which was co-sponsored by Rep. Kubacki in 2013. Each year, the commission studies different issues concerning vulnerable youth and then makes recommendations to the Indiana General Assembly about possible legislation to address some of these concerns.

The Commission has six committees and task forces including Educational Outcomes. The task force plans on meeting every other month and will focus on one or two objectives at each meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 5, and after the last meeting in the fall, the task force will make recommendations to CISC about how to improve the education outcomes for Hoosier children.

“I have really enjoyed my time serving on the commission, and look forward to the future work we will accomplish on the education task force,” said Rep. Kubacki. “It is important for agencies to work together to address common issues, and I believe the work that is being accomplished now will have a positive impact on Hoosier children and their families.”

Other committees and task forces of CISC include: Child Services Oversight Committee, Cross-System Youth, Data Sharing and Mapping, Infant Mortality and Child Health and Substance Abuse and Child Safety.
