STATEHOUSE— House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis) appointed State Representative Timothy Wesco (R-Osceola) to serve as Chairman of the Committee on Child Care this summer.

“Our state’s Legislature accomplished much for Indiana during the 2013 legislative session, and I look forward to the work that will continue during the interim with summer study committees,” said Rep. Wesco. “Throughout the interim, we will establish a base for the 2014 legislative session.”

Every year after the legislative session is completed, the Legislative Council meets to assign topics for study during the interim as well as establish any new interim committee that is needed to examine a particular issue.  Most interim committees will begin meeting in July with their work wrapping up toward the end of October.

Interim committees are an integral part of the legislative process. Even though session is adjourned for 2013, legislators will continue their duties by conducting in-depth studies of various topics assigned to their committees. Interim committees with specific expertise receive public testimony and work out the details of proposed legislation before it is introduced in the 2014 session.

“I am honored to serve as the Chairman of the Committee on Child Care this summer,” said Rep. Wesco. “Our Committee will take a comprehensive look at the state of child care in Indiana. We will examine regulations and make recommendations to further quality, options, access and affordability in child care for Hoosier families. “

Rep. Wesco welcomes input in relation to child care in Indiana and is seeking opportunities to tour child care centers, homes and ministries in Elkhart and St. Joseph Counties. You can contact his office at h21@iga.in.gov or (317) 234-3827.

The Committee on Child Care is a statutory committee established by law. (http://www.in.gov/legislative/ic/code/title12/ar17.2/ch3.3.html)
