While a few new laws have already been enacted, the majority will go into effect Sunday, July 1. Below I have highlighed a few of which you should be aware.
Senate Enrolled Act 293 – Inheritance Tax Phase Out
This law phases out Indiana’s inheritance tax over a period of nine years. Eventually, beneficiaries will no longer be burdened with paying taxes on the small businesses, farms or homes they inherit that have already been subject to taxes.
House Enrolled Act 1116 – Military Education & Training
This law requires a state educational institution to adopt a policy to award educational credit to an individual who is enrolled in a state educational institution and successfully completes courses that are part of the individual’s military service, meet the standards of the American Council on Education (ACE) and meet the state educational institution’s role, scope and mission.
House Enrolled Act 1065 – Military Custody & Parenting Time Matters
Parents with military deployment orders can now delegate a person to be the caretaker of their child when they are away. Additionally, servicemen and women facing divorce and child custody proceedings at the time of their deployment are often unable to attend or set a hearing because of their military duties. This new law allows an expedited hearing in determining child custody and also allows the servicemen or women to delegate their parenting time to a person of their choosing; as long as the court determines it is in the child’s best interest.
Senate Enrolled Act 274 – Immunity for Certain Alcohol Offenses
Also known as the "Life-Line Legislation," this new law prohibits law enforcement officers from arresting people for public intoxication, minor possession, consumption or transportation of an alcoholic beverage if the officer came in contact with the person because that person requested emergency medical assistance due to alcohol consumption.
House Enrolled Act 1134 – School Transportation
This law makes it illegal for parents or students to be charged a fee for bus transportation to and from school.
