4th of July: Proclaiming LIBERTY! "Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof." These words, from Leviticus 25:10, are emblazoned around the top of the world's most famous bell, the Liberty Bell. They refer to the Hebrew "Year of Jubilee" which was to occur every 50th year, when every man was freed to return to his family and his land. Today, I hope you and your family are celebrating Independence Day. But not just as a day to have a cookout with family and friends and watch fireworks; but as a day to truly reflect: to remember that keeping our liberty demands self-control and recognize that if liberty is to be preserved, it must be grounded in laws based on moral absolutes. This thought reminds me of the final lines of a great patriotic hymn written by Katharine Bates: God bless you and your family on this Fourth of July! In God we trust! Timothy |
