STATEHOUSE – Indiana Legislators were sworn in today, Organization Day, which marks the first meeting for the 119th General Assembly. All 100 members of the House, including eight new Republicans, were sworn in by Chief Justice Loretta Rush. State Representative Tom Dermody (R-LaPorte) was reelected to represent House District 20, which includes portions of LaPorte and Starke counties.

“I am humbled by the responsibility our community has entrusted in me,” said Rep. Dermody. “As chairman of the Public Policy Committee, I look forward to continuing to work on some of Indiana’s most pressing issues and having open dialogue with people of all opinions so as to make the best decisions on behalf of northwest Indiana and Hoosiers across the state.”

In addition to being sworn in, every Organization Day includes an announcement made by House Speaker Brian C. Bosma (R-Indianapolis) to support and raise awareness for a certain charity throughout the legislative session. This year’s philanthropy, which the entire House participates in, is the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV).

ICADV is a statewide alliance that provides technical assistance, resources, information and training to those who serve victims of domestic violence. The organization also promotes social and systems change through public policy, public awareness and education.

During Organization Day, Rep. Dermody joined fellow legislators and staff by bringing in bedding, grocery store gift cards, art supplies and other items for domestic violence service providers across the state.

“I cannot think of a more fitting way to begin the 119th General Assembly than with members, from both sides of the aisle, coming together to help Hoosiers in need,” said Rep. Dermody. “I am proud to partner with ICADV and applaud the work that they do throughout the state to increase public awareness, provide legal assistance and support victims of domestic violence.”
