STATEHOUSE—A bill authored by State Rep. Tom Dermody (R-LaPorte) to support Indiana contractors passed the House Government and Regulatory Reform Committee. House Bill (HB) 1223 would give preference to Indiana contractors on public works projects. To ensure fair competition, the bill requires that bidders not know the bid amounts of other contractors. To save as many tax dollars as possible, the contract would have to be promptly awarded to the lowest bidder qualified to complete the project. “This legislation makes sure that Hoosier businesses have a better chance of winning public contracts,” said Rep. Dermody. “As an added benefit, the projects would be completed at the lowest cost to taxpayers.”
