STATEHOUSE – House Speaker Brian C. Bosma (R-Indianapolis) announced that Rep. Tom Dermody (R-LaPorte) will be serving in two leadership capacities for the Indiana House Republican Caucus. In addition to being the Assistant Majority Floor Leader, Rep. Dermody will also be Ways and Means Higher Education Subcommittee Chairman.
All leadership appointments and committee assignments were announced as well. Committee chairmen and caucus leaders are selected biennially by the majority party after each election year.
“I am honored to be the Assistant Majority Floor Leader and will perform my responsibilities to the best of my ability,” said Rep. Dermody. “Serving Hoosiers in this capacity is a privilege and I am ready to begin my leadership roles. There’s a lot of work before us and I am eager to resolve the issues facing Northwest Indiana and all Hoosiers.”
In his position as the Assistant Majority Floor Leader, Rep. Dermody will assist Rep. Friend (R-Macy), Majority Floor Leader, as an advisor and counselor for the caucus by working with all of the members on any issues that arise.
“I am confident in the abilities of each of these leaders, and I know that they are each eager to begin their committee work and their leadership roles,” said Speaker Bosma. “We are preparing a new generation of legislative leadership in Indiana, armed to deal with today’s critical problems. Our constituents expect us to work together, and I assure Hoosiers that we will.”
In addition to his leadership role, Rep. Dermody will also be serving on the Commerce, Small Business and Economic Development Committee.
Standing committees are an integral part of the legislative process. Committees with specific expertise receive public testimony and work out the details of proposed legislation before it is heard on the House floor.
