STATEHOUSE – State Representative Tom Dermody (R-LaPorte) is honored that Jessica-Lena Bohlin, a LaPorte County resident, placed first in the “Our Food, Our Farmers: Nourishing Generations of Hoosiers” essay contest. Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann acknowledged Bohlin, along with five other contest winners, during a ceremony at the Statehouse on Tuesday.
“I was privileged to meet Jessica, who demonstrated hard work and perseverance by placing first in this essay contest, and on behalf of LaPorte County residents, we are very proud of her accomplishment,” said Rep. Dermody. “Agriculture is a major economic engine for our state so to see a dedicated, young Hoosier student taking an interest and distinguishing herself with knowledge in this industry is very impressive.”
This special event kicked off the 2013 celebration of Indiana’s Agriculture Appreciation Month. Sponsored by Indiana's Family of Farmers and Indiana Humanities, this competition encouraged students to communicate what methods farmers use to feed families and animals while keeping soil nutrient-enriched.
The 3rd annual essay contest included over 500 participants. First and second place winners were selected from three grade levels; 4th-6th, 7th-9th and 10th-12th. Bohlin, an 11th grader from LaPorte High School, placed first in the 10th-12th category.
“I was ecstatic when I found out I won the essay contest,” said Bohlin. “Within the last year, I have really gotten into agriculture. I think it is amazing how important agriculture is to everyone, I mean it is where we get our food and yet some people never think twice about it. I was excited to enter this contest because it helped me research and learn more about it.”
