STATEHOUSE — State Representative Dave Wolkins (R-Warsaw) authored legislation concerning recycling, which passed the Indiana House of Representatives on Wednesday.
House Bill (HB) 1183 requires recycling collectors to submit an annual activity report to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM).
The bill also establishes a state goal of recycling at least 50 percent of all municipal waste by 2019.
Currently, Indiana does not have a way of identifying or reporting how much is recycled annually and has no statewide goal for recycling municipal solid waste.
“This is a crucial first step in advancing recycling in our state,” said Rep. Wolkins. “Recycling is one of our strongest avenues for pursuing sustainability on the local level. I believe that these reports provide valuable information that will help us take a fresh look at recycling in Indiana.”
HB 1083 will move to the Senate for further discussion and debate.
